Do You Love To Laugh?

Laugh yourself well and happy. Learn to use laughter to overcome life’s difficulties. Laughter is a simple yet powerful free-self-help tool. There is power in laughter to help and heal. The idea is really simple: even if you don’t feel like laughing that you just start laughing and your body and spirit benefit, even if the laugh is intentional. Laughing is healthy for mankind and the planet.
Laughing increases endorphins, the hormone that induces happiness. Laughter decreases cortisol, the stress hormone. Laughter promotes both mental and physical health. Laughter Yoga combines laughing and deep breathing. The yoga method of breathing brings more oxygen into a body and as you laugh out loud you exercise other internal organs, eg: heart, lungs, and diaphragm. It’s like jogging on the inside.
Everyone can do it. Laughter Yoga exercises don’t need jokes or comedy, special equipment or previous experience and laughter is always free and available. Anyone can laugh intentionally. Laughter is the universal language of friendship and laughter is contagious. At the Funny Farm Laughter Club we catch real laughter from each other.
Laughter Yoga was developed by a medical doctor, Madan Kataria, in 1995. Today, there are Laughter Clubs in 102 countries on 6 continents. Over 3 million people practice Laughter Yoga worldwide. This incredible growth is accomplished by word-of-mouth, without advertising. It is a grass-roots effort toward World Peace.

The Funny Side Of Exercise

Laughter Yoga is mild aerobics exercises that burn calories and tightens muscles. It is a dynamic meditation that includes deep breathing and laughter. It is practiced without jokes or comedy. Mindful breathing, playful imagining, and laughter make up fun exercises that anyone can do. We feel better when we laugh even if we pretend to laugh. In Laughter Yoga we laugh as exercise because we can.

Dr. Madan Kataria developed Laughter Yoga. He organized the first Laughter Yoga Club in 1995, with 5 people in a park in Mumbai India. It was a research project to see if he could duplicate the benefits he was reading about, concerning laughter, and to discover for himself if laughter would help his patients.

In 25 years Laughter Yoga is now practiced in over 100 countries with tens of thousands of free laughter clubs operating in enlightened communities on six continents. All accomplished without advertising, by word-of-mouth, one person telling another, about the life-changing experience daily laughter is. Laughter is contagious.

The Funny Farm Laughter Club meets at 10 am on Saturdays at Perfect Christmas Tree Farm. Laughter Club is a free social club that is non-political and non-religious. No experience or equipment is necessary. We practice Laughter Yoga to promote health, happiness, and World Peace.

New Name, Meeting Dates and Times

It was suggested that the name of our club might offend some people because it is used to mock mental illness. I don’t know if I agree, but I want everyone to be comfortable in our laughter group so we will be called the Fun Farm Laugh Club from now on. Now, how to change it in Word Press and on Facebook? Any suggestion?

Our summer Saturday morning sessions at Perfect Christmas Tree Farm were fun but some people can’t come then. So for autumn, we are switching the day and time to Sunday at 4 pm. We hope for even more participation.

Our newly named Fun Farm Laugh Club meets at the Phillipsburg Free Public Library once a month at 12 noon and at 6:45. From now on, and until further notice, we practice Laughter Yoga on the first Monday every month. Our next sessions are on Nov. 4, 2019.

Make Time To Laugh

Are you lonely, unhappy, stressed, in pain, or just like fun exercise? Then try Laughter Yoga. It is fun and easy to do, sitting or standing. You’ll need no special equipment or previous knowledge. You don’t even need a sense of humor because there are no jokes or comedy. We laugh on purpose as exercise, for health and happiness.

When you exercise with laughter, you stimulate the release of chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain.

Endorphins are involved in our natural reward circuits and are related to important activities like eating, drinking, physical fitness, and sex. They maximize pleasure and minimize discomfort and pain. Laughter Yoga trains us to laugh on purpose in good times and bad.

Regular laughter exercise is proven to:

• Burn calories

• Reduce stress

• Boost self-esteem

• Strengthen and build muscle

• Increases heart and lung function

• Ward off anxiety and feeling of depression

Laughter and Health

It is a medical Dr. who created Laughter Yoga and the Laughter Club, over 25 years ago. Dr. Madan Kataria read the best medical and scientific research about laughter and learned that even pretend laughter creates numerous, unique, and lasting benefits for the mind, body and spirit.

He and his Yoga teacher wife, Madhuri, created a delivery system for laughter. Laughter as exercise, because research said laughter needed to be prolonged to be effective. Spontaneous laughter was unpredictable and short lived. In Laughter Yoga you don’t need humor or jokes. You laugh for no reason, intentionally, because you can, for 20 minutes a day. You can choose to laugh in your community or with others from around the world, on Zoom and Skype, or in person at the Funny Farm Laughter Club.

Laugh for Health, Happiness and World Peace

Laughter stimulates multiple physiological systems that activate the parasympathetic nervous system of the brain. Laughter decreases levels of stress hormones, and at the same time increases endorphins and stimulates the reward system of the brain. Laughter Yoga exercises move the diaphragm and indirectly stimulate the vegus nerve, the body’s major parasympathetic nerve, connecting all the major organs of the body with the brain.

Something So Simple

Laughter therapy shows it improve anxiety in patients with Parkinson’s disease, and Cancer. It reduce anxiety and depression and improve optimism, self-esteem. Psychologist Bernard Saper suggested in a paper for Psychiatric Quarterly that the ability to maintain a sense of humor and the ability to laugh acts as a positive coping mechanisms to help a person get through difficult times. Laughing naturally expels stale air from the lungs so more oxygen enters the body with each new mindful breath. Doing Laughter Yoga exercises brings more oxygen to the brain. Increase in oxygen improves a person’s mood, discussion making, and the ability to concentrate. Laughter Yoga adds fun to exercise.

Researchers have also found evidence of laughter’s ability to increase the body’s natural killer (NK) cells. The study, published in the American Journal of Medical Science, found significantly increased NK cell activity in a group of males after watching humorous videos.

High blood pressure is one of the most dangerous side effects of stress, as well as a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. In a 2011 study, researchers exposed 79 participants to either a music or laughter therapy. Immediately after sessions, the blood pressure readings from the laughers lowered by 7 mmHg – (millimetres of mercury, how the blood pressure readings on a sphygmomanometer are abbreviated). In comparison, music therapy only brought blood pressure down by 6 mmHg. After three months, the blood pressure readings significantly decreased overall by 5 mmHg among the laughers. People in the comparison group showed no change in blood pressure readings.

And, if all these benefits aren’t enough good reasons laugh every day, a 2014 study in the International Journal of Obesity found that laughing burns calories. It also tightens the pelvic floor and core muscles.

Real And Effective Powerful Results

Once you learn Laughter Yoga techniques you use laughter as self-care. Practice laughing anytime you want or need to. Laughter is always free. It is always available. You can share laughter with family, friends and even enemies, and change the world.

“When you laugh you change, when you change, the whole world changes”

– Dr Madan Kataria
